Spray Foam Insulation Installation

Spray foam insulation expands to fill small cracks and crevices around wiring and pipes in crawl spaces, attics and more. Made from polyurethane, foam is the perfect solution to keep your home or building comfortable through chilly winters and scorching summers.

Spray foam has a long life span as an insulation material, and it does not sag or settle as other materials can. Even if spray foam gets wet, it still retains its original shape and R-value, so you can expect your spray foam insulation to last!

Spray foam insulation should be installed by a trained professional—someone who has been trained in the correct safety precautions and possesses the required equipment to mix and apply the product.

Spray Foam Insulation FAQs

Where is spray foam used?

Spray foam can be used to insulate a variety of spaces, including attics, crawl spaces, basements, ceilings, floors and walls.

What’s the major difference between spray foam and traditional insulation?

In addition to providing a thermal barrier, which all types of insulation do, spray foam insulation also provides an effective air barrier. You get air sealing and insulation with one product, for a tight building envelope and maximum energy efficiency. When closed-cell spray foam is used, it also offers a moisture barrier. Spray foam is also insect- and pest-resistant, while other forms of insulation are not.

Does spray foam cost more to install than other types, such as fiberglass batting or cellulose?

Yes. Because spray foam provides multiple advantages, lasts longer than other insulation types, and requires expert installation with specialized equipment, it can cost more upfront.

What is the difference between closed-cell and open-cell spray foam?

Open-cell spray foam cures to a spongy consistency, while closed-cell foam becomes hard and rigid. Closed-cell foam has a higher level of thermal resistance at about R-7, while open-cell offers approximately R-4 per inch. Open-cell foam has superior soundproofing advantages.

Why is open-cell foam recommended for attics?

We generally use open-cell spray foam in attics because, in case of a future roof leak, water passes through, so you can easily see the problem and there’s no trapped water to cause wood rot. Closed-cell spray foam is not water permeable and can trap water, so it is typically best for crawl spaces and basements, to help keep out dampness and avoid musty odors.

There are exceptions, such as in areas of high wind, where closed-cell foam could add strength to the roofline. Our experienced team can explain the best insulation strategy for your specific home or commercial building.

Is spray foam insulation safe?

Yes. We protect the home’s residents or commercial building occupants by requesting that you vacate during our installation process and curing, for about 24 hours. The insulation materials will off-gas during that time and then be completely safe.
